Angels in the Mist

He detected a delicate trace of her scent on the evening air,
But could not see her anywhere.
"I sense your Presence," he said,
"But I can't find you. Are you near?"

"I am," she said, "But you won't find me.
I am a shadow in the dark,
a whisper on the wind,
a wisp of smoke among the clouds.
Find instead the courage to turn and walk away.
Find the faith to believe that I will follow."

"I will envelope you as in a warm safe fog...
You will lose yourself in my embrace..."

"And this is good, but there are questions.
If finding me, should you find me ugly,
will you shuffle your feet, look at the ground;
Make a weak excuse and an awkward exit?
Or worse, should you find me beautiful beyond your dreams
Will you become frightened and flee on feet like wings?
Will you blame me or some cruel twist of fate for this;
Blame anything, anybody, but yourself
and your own lack of resolve?"

"Or will you find in your self the eyes of a child,
to see who I am, as I am, rather than this shell in which I live?
Have you the heart of the lion to accept your own inner beauty,
and to take with grace that which is placed before you?
Will you have the far reaching vision of the eagle high in the sky?
Will you understand how we are different?
How we are very much the same?
How this matters not at all?"

"I am not bold,
but I am brave.
When you hear a knocking, resolute, but also timid,
at your most secret of doors (the one you  hide yourself behind)
will you let me in?

"Are you brave enough for love?"
